Chapter Nine

Lany

I smiled as I watched Cole’s chest move up and down. Once again, I was watching him sleep. I got it that small kids, toddlers, slept a lot, but I also got it that I was slightly obsessed with watching him sleep.

He was just so frigging cute.

I was thrilled to death that my mother had gone home and brought back my baby crib. It looked good in the guest room. Made me wonder if turning the room into a nursery might be the thing to do.

Sal and I had talked about kids, just not this soon.

But could you really plan for kids?

I knew my parents seemed overjoyed by the idea of Sal and I having kids. My father certainly seemed to warm up to Sal the second he realized we wanted some kids. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about that. The total turnaround my father had done where Sal was concerned was bizarre to say the least.

Sal and I had been together for two years, married for one. It felt almost as if my father hadn’t thought we would stick it out together until we decided to have kids, and only then could he believe in us.

Again, not sure how I felt about that.

But I did like the idea of having kids.

I flicked off the overhead light, leaving a nightlight on, and walked out of the room. I left the door ajar so we would hear Cole if he woke up in the morning. Walking into the dining room, I found Sal unpacking all of the stuff my mother had brought over.

There was a lot.

“Need some help there, big man?”

There was pure doubt in Sal’s voice when he replied, “Do kids even need all of this stuff?”

“My mother seems to think so.”

There really was a lot of stuff.

Not only had my mother brought over my crib, she had gone on a shopping spree. There were bags of clothes from Carter’s and OshKosh, two whole cases of diapers, and numerous bags of baby stuff, most of which I had no idea what they were for. Luckily, my mother had included a couple of parenting books and videos.

I needed Parenting for Dummies.

“She does know Cole will be going back to his father’s just as soon as Angelo gets out of the hospital, right?” Sal asked. “We’re not keeping him.”

I prayed Sal was right for his sake. After everything he had learned over the last twenty-four hours, I was positive Sal would be devastated if anything happened to his brother.

“I think my parents like the idea of us having kids.”

Sal’s snort was not attractive.

I wrapped a hand around Sal’s muscled arm and pulled. “Come on to bed. We can sort this stuff tomorrow.”

Sal smiled as he drew his arm back, pulling me into him. “Need some cuddle time, caro?”

“Oh, hell yeah.”

It had been a rough day.

Sal chuckled as he dropped the stuff in his other hand and then grabbed me, lifting me up into his arms. I instinctively wrapped my legs around him, my arms going around his neck.
